This is why we started

Honestly, we are just a bunch of college students trying to make the world a better place.

We have been told most of our lives that if we don't do something the world is going to end and global warming is going to wipe out human existence (and that sucks). It sucks that ever since grade school we've been told that the past generations have screwed us over and now we need to do something before it’s too late. For most of my life I picked up trash here and there, I have done my best to remember to turn off the lights when I leave a room, and attempted to recycle, but I never believed it was possible for anyone to stop global warming. At the same time, I have been waiting for some rich billionaire or maybe even the government to step up and plant billions of trees, or feed the world and give everyone access to clean water, or find a way to stop putting so much carbon in the atmosphere, or clean up the plastic islands in the ocean.

These scenarios caused me to look introspectively, and I realized that I am more part of the problem than the solution. There are people who are cleaning up the Earth and trying to make it greener while I was just too busy being part of the problem to see it. Sure, I recycle but honestly, I probably do it wrong. I turn off the lights when I leave but I leave my Xbox and TV plugged in. I take long, hot showers when I don't feel like going to work early. I buy products with single use plastic packaging and have it shipped with vehicles that emit harmful chemicals to the atmosphere. I am not high and mighty being eco-friendly, but I knew that if I didn’t want to be part of the problem, I had to be part of the solution. This pledge marked the start of earthrYte.

It is clear that Humankind is hurting the Earth. Our daily habits are hurting our planet in more ways that we can count. The lucky thing is, our Earth is incredibly resilient, and our habits are changeable; we just need to know how to change them. Knowing how to save the planet is a far-fetched concept that I don't have the answer to, but I don't think that is my job. I think that I am supposed to inspire others however, to solve the problems that no one person can solve alone, but maybe a group of unified people might be able to solve together. I don't think there is going to be one great invention that saves humanity, but I believe small changes in all of our daily lives can make astronomical impacts. I believe that earthrYte can be a symbol for people to come together and help save the planet.

As human beings, we sometimes focus a little too much on problems or things that aren't going well and it's important to also remember the problems that we have solved and the things that are going well. The fact that you can read this off the internet is insane, heck it's even crazy that we've created language that people can speak, read and write! Fixing and tweaking things that can make the world a better place is very important, but there is so much cool stuff in this world that we have to be grateful for. We can't only see the bad and take the good for granted. Small things can go a long way, that is why the small businesses or inventions that bind together, can make a huge lasting impact. When people ask us about earthrYte or about why we started it, the answer is simple, we are trying to attribute earthrYte as a small gratuity to mother nature to thank her for all that she has done for us. We want to get better at getting better.

Thanks for reading and it's really okay if you don't buy a shirt or subscribe to challenge yourself to live a more sustainable life, but if you could do one thing for me... Enjoy the planet :)

This article is actually super cool. Whoever started this idea must be a really cool person! I feel empowered and inspired when I read this and I’m ready to change this world for the better.

I like the article!

I’m serious about the Nairobi visit, it would be a blast to have you visit for a week (or 2 or 3).
